A new article every 18 seconds and 29 million interactions in three days. This is how the world reacted to Robert Lewandowski farewell to Barcelona
When Robert Lewandowski joined Barcelona in 2022, the club’s media made the mistake of calling him a “German striker”. Although he had already achieved iconic status at Bayern, his move to Catalonia ultimately cemented his status in global sport. Today, no one doubts the origins of our national football team captain – an analysis by the Institute of Media Monitoring (IMM) shows that foreign portals wrote about him on average every 18 seconds.
Last weekend, the eyes of the entire sports world were on Barcelona. First, Robert Lewandowski announced his farewell to the Spanish team after four years and then played his final match at Camp Nou. The club bid farewell to the Pole with the highest honors, publishing emotionally charged social media posts and unequivocally declaring him a legend. The Institute of Media Monitoring analyzed how this event resonated in global media outlets.
Global stir
In the analysed period (16-18 May 2026), nearly 12,000 publications about Robert Lewandowski’s departure from FC Barcelona appeared on foreign websites. This means that from the announcement by the Polish national team captain (around 1:00 PM on 16 May) until the end of the day on 18 May, a new publication about the event was created on average every 18 seconds.
The news electrified fans and media outlets on every continent, causing the greatest stir in Europe and in the Americas. Poland led the rankings in terms of online publications with 2,130 articles, followed closely by Spain (1,189 publications) and the United States (959 publications). Next in line were Germany (747), France (345), India (344), Brazil (335) and Italy (301). Rounding out the top ten were Mexico with 272 articles and Argentina, which recorded 210 online publications.

It is incredible what emotions and reactions Robert Lewandowski bidding farewell to Barcelona has evoked. The club’s media mistake from the past is now just a funny anecdote. IMM data clearly shows that Spain lived this farewell second by second, publishing nearly 1,200 articles in less than three days. The significant amount of coverage in the United States, India, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina is the clear evidence that Lewandowski’s personal brand is a global phenomenon, reaching far beyond the Old Continent – comments Tomasz Lubieniecki, Head of Media Reports Department at IMM.
Millions of online engagements
The Pole’s departure sparked a massive wave of engagement on social media. The total number of interactions (comments, reactions, and shares) worldwide reached nearly 29 million. This means that for every second from Lewandowski’s announcement until the end of the day on 18 May, fans left 136 interactions.

The IMM analysis highlights the exceptionally strong position of the footballer’s own communication channels, which attracted over a third of the whole global attention. Robert Lewandowski’s own profiles generated a staggering 10.3 million interactions, while other accounts – including club and sports profiles, influencers and fans – added a further 18.8 million interactions (reactions, comments, and shares).
The FC Barcelona’s official farewell posts sparked a flurry of comments, with fans from around the world thanking the striker for his professionalism, key goals and contribution to rebuilding the club’s strength.
Generating nearly 29 million interactions in just three days is a result reserved for the absolute top global celebrities and brands. Over 10 million interactions on the footballer’s own profiles demonstrate the powerful, loyal community that the athlete can directly manage. Robert Lewandowski has once again proven that he is currently the most recognizable and effective ambassador for Poland in the world. For the marketing market, the conclusion is simple: Lewandowski ends this stage of his career as a global pop culture icon with enormous commercial value, and all fans await with great interest further information about his upcoming career plans – summarizes Tomasz Lubieniecki of IMM.
